Around the water cooler!
Well it’s getting to be that time of the year when Halloween parties, Christmas parties and your assorted company Holiday parties take place. Depending where you live, the weather should be taken into consideration. For those of us who live in Snow Belt regions this is a reality. So what this has to do with DJ’ing? Everything! Here is a scenario (and by the way, this happened to me!) You have a great gig, you are all packed up and ready to roll, the weather looks okay (to you at least!) and you head out. Now your gig went great and everybody had a great time. You walk outside and you find 10” of snow on the ground and it’s still coming down and your remark is “Oh Sh**!” No snow shovel around and none in your van so you use a broom. No plastic covers for your speakers so they don’t get wet, so you use your coat! Which by the way you get soaking wet and cold! You finally get all packed and roll out and visibility is 3 feet at the most. Then starts the “Oh I should have done this and that!” routine. Well needless to say a 40 minute ride took me two hours plus 45 minute to unload. Then I spent 3 days in bed with one heck of cold. So here is Pete’s list of things to keep with you this time of the year.
1: Shovel – Show shovel and a steel shovel (in case you get stuck)
2: Plastic covers – The blue type plastic tarps work great
3: Snow chains – Just in case the roads demand it
4: Big tires for the hand cart – Change your hand cart tires to a larger size, so you can roll better through the deep snow
5: Front radiator cover – This is an old truck driver trick; cover the radiator (at least half to raise the temperature up if your truck is running cold.
6: Extra clothing and snack food – Just in case you get wet, you have dry clothes to change into and food to keep your blood sugar up
7: Winterize your vehicle – This is a must and we are all guilty of missing this..
And do listen to the weather report for the day of your gig so you can plan ahead, like staying a motel if it worsens. One thing I do in case the weather gets bad is I will cut my show short and give a credit to folks who hire me so everybody can get home safely. Believe me they will hire you again!
